THE SOUTHEAST 1700: SOME MAJOR NATIVE REGIONS

AT ONE TIME THE MODERN SOUTHEAST WAS KNOWN AS THE OLD SOUTHWEST. THE GENERAL BORDERS OF THIS MAP CAN BE THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER LEFT SIDE, THE OHIO RIVER ALONG THE TOP TO ABOUT JAMESTOWN, VIRGINIA TOP RIGHT; THE EASTERN SEABOARD TO FLORIDA AND ACROSS THE BEACHES OF THE GULF OF MEXICO.

The Shawnee and Cherokee claims overlapped in Kentucky, prime buffalo hunting grounds. The Cherokee and Chickasaw fought over the control of Muscle Shoals in north Alabama; the Choctaw and Chickasaw were hostile towards one another; the Muskogee or Creek Confederacy was ancient alliances of many smaller tribes. The Wateree was just one of several prominent coastal tribes along the Carolina coasts.  Detailed maps of the Southeast will be added as I get them off of my drawing board.
